A country of southeast Africa. The Portuguese colonized the area beginning in 505 and governed it as part of their Indian holdings until 752, when a separate administrative unit was formed. As Portuguese East Africa it became an overseas province in 95, but increasing nationalist feeling and guerrilla activity forced Portugal to grant Mozambique its independence in 975. Maputo is the capital and the largest city. Population, 2,30,000.
