threaten, menace

这两个动词均有“威胁、恐吓”之意。
threaten: 侧重扬言要对不服从者给予惩罚，有时指某种情况所预示的恶兆。
menace: 系正式用词，着重以脸色或某种意志给以威胁，而不用语言明白表示出来。

1. The strikers were threatened with dismissal if they did not return to work.
   罢工者受到威胁说，如果他们不复工，就会被解雇。
2. While danger threatens we must all be on guard.
   危险正逼近，我们必须保持警惕。
3. The black clouds threatened rain.
   乌云密布预示着将要下雨。
